Ninth Parliament resumes sittings with mid-year budget review on agenda

Parliament resumes sitting today, Tuesday, May 27, 2025, marking the beginning of the Second Meeting of the First Session of the Ninth Parliament following the Easter recess.

The resumption was officially announced by the Speaker of Parliament, Rt. Hon. Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, in a notice dated May 12, in accordance with Order 58 of the Standing Orders of Parliament.

Proceedings are scheduled to begin at 10:00 a.m. at Parliament House in Accra.

This new parliamentary meeting signals the return to full legislative activity, with Members of Parliament expected to engage in debates, conduct committee work, and examine key national issues.

Among the most anticipated events this session is the presentation of the 2025 Mid-Year Budget Review by the Minister for Finance, expected in August.

Speaking on Citi FM ahead of the sitting, Second Deputy Majority Whip Richard Acheampong underscored the packed nature of the legislative calendar.

He noted that ministerial statements would play a crucial role in assessing government performance and outlining future plans.

“The ministers will make their statements so we can assess their achievements over the past three months and understand their plans going forward. We have a packed agenda this sitting, including the mid-year budget review in August,” Acheampong said.

In preparation for the session, the Minority Caucus held a retreat over the weekend to reflect on its legislative performance and strategize for the weeks ahead.

Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin reiterated the caucus’s commitment to rigorous oversight and expressed its long-term political aspirations.

“We are sending a strong message to our opponents—we will hold their feet to the fire while remaining a responsible opposition. I assure Ghanaians that we are ready to take power in 2028,” he said.

With Parliament back in session, attention is expected to shift to the legislative priorities of both sides of the House as they prepare to address critical issues affecting the nation.
