‘Nkoko Nketenkete’ pilot succeeds, 720,000 Birds Distributed to Farmers

The government is launching a full national rollout of its “Nkoko Nketenkete” poultry initiative following a successful pilot that distributed 720,000 birds to 13,000 farmers.

The announcement was made by the Minister for Food and Agriculture, Eric Opoku, at the Government Accountability Series in Accra.

Minister Opoku outlined the programme’s comprehensive approach, which includes supplying 50,000 guinea keets to households and 50,000 pullets to female farmers.

Commercial farmers are also receiving 100,000 broilers and guinea fowls at a 50% subsidy, supported by feed, vaccines, and medication.

Beyond poultry, the initiative is strengthening crop production. The minister reported the distribution of over 91,000 bags of various fertilizers and thousands of bags of seeds for maize, rice, soybean, and cowpea to participating districts.

To ensure year-round farming, the government is aggressively improving irrigation infrastructure.

Key projects include the construction of 10 new dams, rehabilitation of several major irrigation schemes, and the deployment of over 300 solar-powered boreholes for farming communities.

On food security, Opoku highlighted a significant drop in food inflation, which has fallen from 61% in January 2023 to 9.5% as of October 2025.

He also confirmed a partnership with the Korea Rural Cooperation to develop 100 hectares of irrigated land for rice seed production, aiming to achieve rice seed independence for Ghana by 2027.
