None is above the Law

Attorney-General Dr. Dominic Ayine has rejected claims that security officials raided the residence of former Bank of Ghana (BoG) Governor, Dr. Ernest Addison, insisting that the operation was a lawful search backed by a court-issued warrant.

Addressing a press conference in Accra on Monday, March 24, Dr. Ayine emphasized that no one is above the law and that such legal procedures are not unprecedented.

“They came to my house in July 2017 with guns, but I didn’t call a press conference to say this was a raid. They showed me a warrant that they were conducting investigations into a transaction in respect of which I had written a legal opinion, that is, the Ameri Deal,” he said.

Drawing a parallel between his own experience and the recent search at Dr. Addison’s home, the Attorney-General questioned why the incident was being framed as a raid.

“They came to my house with guns, but can you go back to the internet to check if this was described as a raid on my house? So how come that a search of the Governor’s house, based upon credible intelligence that we received, is being labeled differently?” he asked.

Dr. Ayine further revealed that he personally obtained the legal authorization for the operation.

“I was the one who applied for the warrant and got them issued by the High Court for searches to be conducted… none is above the law,” he stated.
