Nothing criminal about it — Awal Mohammed defends Abronye over IGP insult

Awal Mohammed has criticised the arrest of Bono Regional Chairman, Kwame Baffoe Abronye, describing it as an attack on free speech.

The Member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) communication team argued that the charges against Abronye were baseless and politically motivated.

“Abronye’s crime is that he spoke against the IGP. Shamelessly, look at what the judge said—that we are not equal before the law.

“A judge who was due for retirement even attacked the constitution, using dictators as justification to incarcerate Abronye just for free speech,” he said on Prime Insight on Joy Prime on Saturday.

Mr. Mohammed further questioned the grounds of the case, insisting there is no legal basis for criminalising insults.

“The charge sheet said he made some incendiary comments against the IGP. Why was he arrested?

“Because he said the IGP is the dumbest he has ever seen. There is nothing in the law that criminalises this,” he stressed.

He maintained that such actions undermine Ghana’s democratic credentials and recalled past struggles that led to the repeal of the criminal libel law, which had previously been used to silence dissent.
