NPP expands Electoral college ahead of 2028 flagbearer race

In a sweeping reform aimed at deepening internal democracy, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has expanded its Electoral College for the selection of its 2028 presidential candidate.

The decision, seen as a strategic move to broaden participation and engagement within the party, forms part of a larger effort to restructure and reposition the NPP following its 2024 electoral loss.

The amendment was formally adopted during the National Annual Delegates Conference held on July 19, 2025, where Frank Davies, Chairman of the Constitution Amendment Committee, detailed the new changes. He confirmed that the 2025 constitutional amendment had been approved to allow for a more inclusive presidential primary.

“Whereas the National Council of the party has, pursuant to Article 13(1) of the constitution, scheduled January 31, 2026 as the date to elect the party’s 2028 presidential candidate,” Davies explained, “the National Annual Delegates Conference has adopted an amendment to expand the Electoral College for this purpose.”

Under the revised structure, the Electoral College now includes a wider range of party stakeholders such as:

  • All former Members of Parliament (MPs)
  • All former parliamentary candidates
  • All former Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs)
  • All card-bearing former ministers and deputy ministers
  • All former regional, constituency, and branch executives
  • All members of the National Council of Elders and National Council of Patrons
  • Regional and constituency patrons and elders
  • All TESCON coordinators

The reform is expected to bring greater inclusivity and transparency to the NPP’s internal electoral processes, signaling the party’s renewed commitment to unity, openness, and democratic engagement as it looks ahead to the next general election.
