NPP flagbearer race: Where NPP MPs stand ahead of crucial primaries

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) is entering a decisive phase in its search for a flagbearer, with Members of Parliament revealing their political loyalties in what promises to be a fiercely contested primary.

The internal race has already begun to reshape alliances within the party, with some MPs openly declaring their support for key contenders while others have chosen to remain on the fence.

Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, Ghana’s Vice President, appears to have taken an early lead in terms of endorsements from MPs. His support base includes influential figures like Kojo Oppong-Nkrumah, Sammi Awuku, Frank Annoh-Dompreh, Francis Asenso-Boakye, Dominic Nitiwul, and Mustapha Yussif, among others.

This wide backing suggests confidence in Bawumia’s candidacy as one rooted in continuity and experience within government. His growing list of supporters cuts across different regions and includes both long-serving and emerging politicians within the NPP.

Bryan Acheampong has also managed to gather meaningful support. MPs such as Davis Opoku Ansah, Shirley Kyei, and George Kwame Aboagye have publicly backed him, giving weight to his candidacy. While his support base may be smaller, it reflects loyalty to a figure regarded for his expertise in security and national development.

Kennedy Agyapong remains another formidable force in the race, drawing support from MPs like Alexander Afenyo-Markin, Patricia Appiagyei, Stephen Amoah, and Abena Osei Asare. His reputation for outspokenness and grassroots appeal appears to have resonated with a section of the party’s parliamentary caucus.

Other contenders have also secured endorsement from MPs. Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum and Patrick Yaw Boamah have attracted backing from lawmakers who see them as policy-driven candidates capable of charting a new course for the party. Though their support remains limited in comparison, their presence adds depth to the contest.

Some MPs have, however, chosen to remain undecided for now. Among them are Kwaku Asante-Boatang, Isaac Yaw Opoku, Ernest Yaw Anim, and Adelaide Ntim.
