NPP supported GoldBod but demanded amendments – Sammy Gyamfi

Sammy Gyamfi has dismissed claims that the GoldBod Bill was rushed through Parliament without proper diligence, emphasizing that the legislative process was one of the most rigorous in recent history.
Speaking on the bill’s journey, Gyamfi revealed that even the New Patriotic Party (NPP) minority, led by Hon. Mohammed Amin Adam, acknowledged the importance of establishing GoldBod. However, they sought to ensure that the bill was “fit for purpose,” leading to a thorough review process.
“The NPP side, led by Hon. Mohammed Amin Adam, made it clear that they supported the establishment of the GoldBod in principle but wanted to ensure the bill was fit for purpose,” Gyamfi explained.
“At this session, which lasted over four hours, several amendments were accepted, while others were abandoned after extensive discussions.
“A very respected NPP MP confided in me that he had never seen a bill undergo such stringent parliamentary scrutiny.”
Despite being developed and passed within 68 days, Gyamfi insists the bill was anything but rushed.
“On the contrary, it is a product of diligent work, extensive stakeholder consultations, and thorough parliamentary scrutiny,” he affirmed.
The GoldBod Bill aims to regulate Ghana’s gold trade more effectively, ensuring transparency and maximizing benefits for the country’s economy.
