NPP’s Justin Kodua shoots down claims of rigged primaries

General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Justin Frimpong Kodua, has firmly dismissed growing concerns that the party’s upcoming presidential primaries have been strategically structured to favour former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia or any other aspirant.
Speaking in an interview on Channel One, Mr. Kodua rejected what he described as speculative narratives and insisted that the party’s internal democratic processes remain intact and fair to all aspirants.
“If you have monitored our electoral history even from 1992, 1996 to 2000, at every election — from national through to polling stations — about 70%, sometimes even 80%, of current executives retain their positions,” he stated, highlighting the consistency in leadership retention within the party as evidence of a robust and fair system.
He further emphasized that the internal structures do not give undue advantage to any particular candidate, adding that “the fact that you may even start from polling station to national or national to polling station does not make it skewed towards a particular person.
There are current executives who will still continue to be executives.”
His comments come in the wake of heightened discussions surrounding the party’s presidential primaries, officially scheduled for January 31, 2026.
The date was approved by the NPP’s National Council, following the advice of the party’s Constitution Review Committee.
Some party members and political analysts had earlier raised concerns over the timing and structuring of the primaries, suggesting they might inadvertently benefit Dr. Bawumia, who remains a leading contender to lead the NPP into the 2028 general elections.
However, the General Secretary’s latest clarification seeks to allay those fears, reinforcing the NPP’s commitment to a level playing field as the party prepares to select its next flagbearer.
