Nursing college in Kumasi closed over four-Year-Old accreditation issue

The Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) has ordered the immediate closure of the Royal Nursing College in Kumasi after it was discovered that the institution’s accreditation expired nearly four years ago.
According to a letter dated September 12, 2025, and signed by GTEC Director-General Prof. Ahmed Jinapor Abdulai, the college’s accreditation lapsed on December 16, 2021.
GTEC warned that the college cannot continue operating as a tertiary institution until it regains full accreditation from both the Commission and the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC).
This action follows a joint meeting on August 28, 2025, between the college’s management, GTEC, the NMC, and the Ministry of Health’s Health Training Institutions Unit.
During the meeting, regulators reviewed the institution’s operations and identified gaps that need urgent attention.
The Commission has mandated several immediate steps. The college must submit full documentation for all staff, including appointment letters, CVs, and proof of regular payment, to verify the employment status of both teaching and administrative personnel.
Admissions must be suspended, and the school must work with its mentor institution, the University of Cape Coast, to create a teach-out plan for students enrolled between 2021 and 2024.
GTEC also instructed the college to resolve all regulatory deficiencies and provide verifiable evidence of corrective actions.
Only after a joint inspection by GTEC and the NMC will the possibility of restoring accreditation be considered.
