Olanrewaju’s cause of death still unknown

The cause of Nigerian boxer Gabriel Oluwasegun Olanrewaju’s tragic death remains uncertain as the Ghana Boxing Authority (GBA) awaits the results of an autopsy.

Olanrewaju collapsed during a bout against Ghanaian boxer Jonathan Mbanugu on Saturday, March 29, 2025, and was later pronounced dead.

Mohammed Amin Lamptey, the Communication Director of the Ghana Boxing Authority, has confirmed that authorities are still in the dark regarding the exact circumstances of Olanrewaju’s passing.

“As we speak now, we cannot tell what really killed Gabriel. We are waiting for the autopsy,” Lamptey revealed.

“The medical examination is expected to shed light on the cause of death and clarify whether any pre-existing medical conditions or injuries may have played a role in the tragedy.

In response to the incident, the Ghana Boxing Authority has pledged to review its safety protocols and collaborate with relevant stakeholders to enhance protections for fighters.

The sudden loss of Olanrewaju has reignited concerns about boxer safety, medical checks, and emergency response measures in the sport.

The authority’s commitment to investigating the incident and implementing changes is seen as a necessary step.

Many within the boxing community hope that this tragedy will catalyze improved regulations and better protection for athletes in the ring.
