Omane Boamah fires back at Bawumia over 2024 election defeat claims

Defence Minister Dr. Omane Boamah has pushed back against former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s recent comments on the reasons behind the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) loss in the 2024 general elections.

Dr. Bawumia, who served as the NPP’s presidential candidate, has pointed to several factors, including the controversy surrounding the incomplete National Cathedral project and internal divisions within the party, as major contributors to their defeat.

He argued that public trust was eroded by the $58 million spent on the Cathedral, among other issues.

Speaking at the launch of his national Thank You Tour in Takoradi on Saturday, April 26, Dr. Bawumia also stressed that internal party conflicts weakened their campaign efforts.

According to him, criticisms from within the NPP were seized upon by the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) and used effectively in their media campaigns.

“Unity is key in every group endeavour, but for the 2024 elections we faced internal issues,” Dr. Bawumia noted.

“Comments from our own members were replayed by the NDC in a series of adverts to undermine our campaign.”

However, Dr. Omane Boamah has challenged this narrative, accusing the former Vice President of refusing to take personal responsibility for the NPP’s poor economic management while in government.

“Elections 2024: Bawumia is blaming everything and everybody EXCEPT HIMSELF. Bawumia was critical for NPP’s economic mess!” Dr. Boamah wrote in a social media post.
