One arrested at Council of State election re-run in Ashanti Region

One person has been arrested in the council of state election re-run in the Ashanti Region.

The individual was arrested for attempting to breach security protocols at the voting area after police had mounted barricades at the venue to beef security.

The re-run of the election in the Region was necessitated by the chaos and disruption last week which abruptly halted the elections after a group of thugs attacked the Electoral Commission (EC) officials and destroyed several materials, including cast ballot papers.

The re-run was moved from the regional coordinating council to the Prempeh assembly following calls for a change in venue by some of the candidates.

As expected, security has been beefed up to prevent any activities that may disrupt the process.

86 delegates are expected to vote to elect the regional representative on the council. According to TV3’s Ashanti Regional Correspondent, the remaining 39 voters arrived in a bus to vote which briefly caused tensions at the voting centre.

Key individuals like Kennedy Agyepong and former Education Minister, Dr. Adutwum were not allowed entry to the voting area because they did not have accreditation.

This was to prevent any disruption of the process as persons without accreditation also attempted to force their way into the voting area.
