One suspect killed as police confront armed criminals in Tamale

The IGP Special Operations Team faced armed resistance during an intelligence-led operation in the Aboabo Forest enclave, Tamale Metropolis, targeting robbery and drug trafficking suspects.

“The attack placed the lives of team members in immediate danger,” a police report said. Officers returned fire, striking one suspect, while others fled.

The injured suspect was pronounced dead at Tamale Teaching Hospital, and his body was sent to the mortuary for autopsy.

Earlier, the team, led by ASP Bawah Abdul Jalil, paid a courtesy call on Sheikh Basha of Masjidul Bayan mosque.

The briefing focused on crime prevention, including robbery, attacks on mobile money vendors, rape, and drug peddling. “Sheikh Basha offered prayers, encouragement and support for the police,” the report stated.

The operation also led to arrests in Sanzhirigu, with recovery of dried leaves suspected to be Indian hemp and bottles of Koffex syrup. Police noted the forest area is a known hideout for gangs.

“The team maintained high levels of discipline, tactical coordination and adherence to rules of engagement,” the report said, adding that their conduct reinforces public confidence in efforts to curb violent crime in Tamale.
