Only Mahama can match Bawumia in 2028 race

Political analyst and lecturer at the University of Ghana, Dr. Joshua Jebuntie Zaato, has expressed strong confidence in the leadership capabilities of former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, saying he remains the most formidable candidate for the 2028 presidential election.
Dr. Zaato declared that no contender from the National Democratic Congress (NDC) comes close to Bawumia in terms of competence and experience.
“Ghana will be in safe hands if Ghana is handed to him. No other person in the NDC apart from President Mahama can be compared to Bawumia.
“No one in the NDC comes close to Dr Mahamudu Bawumia as far as the 2028 election is concerned. He has the experience and competency to win the next election,” he said during a panel discussion on TV3’s Key Points.
Dr. Zaato’s comments come at a time when conversations around Bawumia’s political strength are intensifying within the New Patriotic Party (NPP), especially as the party prepares for its internal contest to select a flagbearer.
Executive Director of Global InfoAnalytics, Mussa Dankwah, has also noted that the race remains open despite Bawumia’s consistent lead in recent polls.
In an interview with Bernard Avle on Citi FM’s Point Blank, he revealed that a large segment of party delegates have yet to make up their minds.
“To have 27% of respondents who are NPP members say they are undecided, that’s pretty serious,” Dankwah disclosed, adding that Bawumia’s support had slightly dipped between July and September, but those votes did not shift to his closest rival, Kennedy Agyapong.
“That drop didn’t go to Kennedy. It rather went to undecided. Kennedy and the others were flat. Nothing changed much in their numbers,” he explained.
He further cautioned that the undecided bloc could still shape the outcome of the internal race.
“No, it’s still not over. I wouldn’t say it’s over. But if you look at where the leading candidate is, it’s highly unlikely everyone will go to one candidate,” Dankwah noted.
