Only unity can save NPP – Kennedy Agyapong urges party to come together

Former NPP presidential aspirant Kennedy Agyapong has called for peace and unity within the New Patriotic Party (NPP), urging members to set aside differences for the party’s survival.
Speaking on the Asaase Breakfast Show with Kwaku Nhyira Addo on Monday, Agyapong said, “I use the day to call for unity in the party. We need peace, and that’s the only way NPP can survive. So I use this occasion to preach peace and unity.”
His appeal comes in the wake of growing tensions between his camp and that of Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, who led the party into the 2024 elections.
In a recent speech in Mampong, Agyapong controversially claimed the NPP’s electoral defeat was linked to choosing a Muslim flagbearer.
He further argued that Bawumia should not have been given the nod, comparing his run to that of former President John Agyekum Kufuor, who, according to Agyapong, earned a second chance because he had a short time to campaign in 1996.
But Bawumia’s allies swiftly pushed back, accusing Agyapong of peddling falsehoods and promoting divisive narratives.
“This is false. Kufuor was elected flagbearer in April 1996, giving him eight months to campaign.
“If short campaigns earned second chances, then Adu Boahen—who had just two months in 1992—would have been re-elected,” they stated, challenging the historical accuracy of Agyapong’s remarks.
They further criticised him for what they described as inconsistency in his political commentary: “First, he says we lost because Bawumia is Muslim.
“Then he says we lost because Akufo-Addo didn’t appoint enough party faithful. Which is it? Ken must decide what story he wants to tell.”
