Our democracy is under threat from political intolerance – Afenyo-Markin

Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin has warned that Ghana’s democratic values and judicial independence are under threat due to increasing acts of political intolerance and questionable judicial reasoning.

Speaking on the floor of Parliament on Tuesday, October 21, 2025, Afenyo-Markin criticised the frequent arrests of opposition figures, journalists, and social media users, describing the trend as an attempt to silence dissent.

“The frequent arrest of opposition figures, journalists, and ordinary citizens on flimsy and politically motivated charges exemplify a pattern of harassment intended to silence dissent,” he stated.

He noted that the case of social media user David Afful, also known as Kwame Nkrumah II, was emblematic of double standards in law enforcement.

“He was swiftly arrested, prosecuted, and sentenced to seven months in prison,” Afenyo-Markin said.

“Much as the law must be applied, we must ask, is the state equally swift when government-affiliated individuals commit similar or worse infractions?”
