Our democracy will collapse if we weaken independent bodies

Member of Parliament for Manhyia South, Hon. Nana Agyei Baffour Awuah, has cautioned political actors against actions that weaken or manipulate the 1992 Constitution and its independent bodies.
He insisted that constitutional tampering begins subtly and eventually destabilizes democracies.
According to him, the constitution carries what he described as a “spirit,” and altering its structures can destroy its protective force.
“If you tamper with it, you tamper with the spirit of the constitution,” he said on Metro TV’s Good Evening Ghana monitored by MyNewsGh, stressing that once this spirit departs, the document becomes powerless.
He pointed to developments in Togo and parts of French West Africa as examples of how gradual interference can escalate. “It starts gradual. The next moment, boom, there is an explosion,” he warned.
The MP defended the judiciary as the bedrock of Ghana’s democracy. He said judges must uphold their independence because their protection is guaranteed under the constitution.
“Nobody can touch you unless Article 146 is triggered, and if it is triggered, the public will know it’s because you stood your ground,” he added.
Hon. Baffour Awuah urged the public and political leadership to avoid using constitutional bodies as political tools, stressing that once institutions are compromised, democratic systems deteriorate quickly.
