Outrage on social media after South African gay couple share intimate moment at Black Star Square

There is outrage on social media in Ghana after photos of a gay couple kissing at the Black Star Square have gone viral.

The worry mostly is not about the photos of the two men kissing, but rather the fact that they took such pictures at a security zone of a national monument.

To many Ghanaians, it is disrespectful to the country and a dent on the current government when they, while in opposition, filed an anti-LGBTQI+ bill in parliament to ban same-sex relationships in Ghana.

From MyNewsGh.com’ search, the couple use the Instagram handle lueandrue and took the pictures as part of their campaign dubbed  #ShowGhanaLove 🏳️‍🌈.

The two are South Africans called LUE & RUE, who are currently in Ghana as part of their advocacy and have even visited the Aburi Gardens where they took other more intimate pictures.

Their Instagram post announcing their campaign which was accompanied with the photos read “Never in our lives did we think we’d find ourselves in Ghana, doing something so simple and yet so defiant.

A few months ago, we came across an article about the Ghanaian government’s attempt to pass an anti-LGBTQIA+ bill. If passed, the bill would mean up to three years in prison for being queer and five for supporting someone who is.

Coming out was already hard. Some of our own family members struggled to accept us. But imagine waking up and realising that just being who you are could land you in prison. Not because you’ve harmed anyone, but because of who you love. That will be the reality of queer Ghanaians.
That’s why we’re here to meet hate with love and stand in solidarity with queer Ghanaians. Through the #ShowGhanaLove campaign, we’re confronting the erasure and criminalisation of queer people by love-bombing Ghana’s iconic landmarks of freedom, showing that until queer people are free, no one truly is. ✊🏼🇬🇭🏳️‍🌈
