Over half of our water is lost before it reaches customers – GWL CEO

The Ghana Water Limited (GWL) has sounded the alarm over the alarming rate of water loss within its distribution system, revealing that as of December 2024, only 48 percent of the water it produces successfully reaches consumers.

The remaining 52 percent is lost due to various factors, including pipeline leakages, illegal connections, and inefficiencies in the water distribution infrastructure.

Speaking at a forum in Accra, the acting Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Ghana Water Limited, Adam Mutawakilu, expressed deep concern over the situation.

“Furthermore, high level of water loss due to leakage in pipes, illegal connection and inefficient distribution systems continue to circumvent water loss before it even reaches consumers. As at the end of December 2024, non-revenue water was 52 percent.

“So that means the moment we produce water and dispatch only 48 percent gets to customers,” he stated.

Apparently, the high rate of non-revenue water—water that is produced but never billed due to losses—poses a significant challenge for the utility provider.
