Afro-folk musician Wanlov the Kubolor has shared deep reflections on freedom, creativity, and his evolving mission to give back to society.
Wanlov said he has found peace by living on his own terms, away from societal expectations.
“I’ve created my own world,” he said Appearing on Joy Prime with Asieduwaa Akumi as monitored by MyNewsGh. “Everyone’s path to freedom is different, but for me, it’s about living honestly and without fear.”
He also clarified the meaning behind his name “Kubolor”, which many associate with rebellion.
According to him, Kubolor symbolizes resistance against colonial systems like school, church, and the nuclear family.
“Those structures came from colonizers. They often divide people instead of uniting them. So to me, ‘One Love’ and ‘Kubolor’ blend perfectly,” he explained.
Despite being misunderstood for years, Wanlov says he’s now reaping the rewards of staying authentic. “It took a while, but people are beginning to understand my art,” he revealed.
“I’m producing artists now, and it’s paying off financially. I’m happy with how things are going.”
The musician also disclosed that he recently established The Kubolor Foundation, aimed at supporting community projects and youth empowerment.
“I’ve been doing social work for years, but now I want to make it official,” he said. “The foundation gives me structure to help more people.”
True to his free-spirited nature, Wanlov arrived at the interview barefoot on a motorbike, a visual reminder of his artistic authenticity.
“I just like things that are different,” he laughed. “I do what excites me, and that gives me energy.”
