Petition targets former Attorney-General over alleged ethical breaches in Ato Forson trial

A formal complaint filed with the General Legal Council (GLC) is demanding disciplinary action against former Attorney-General and Minister for Justice, Godfred Yeboah Dame, over allegations of professional misconduct in the high-profile criminal trial involving Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson and others.

The petition, lodged by Ghanaian citizen Daniel Kwame Ofosu-Appiah under Section 18 of the Legal Profession Act, 1960 (Act 32), accuses Mr. Dame of violating legal ethics by engaging in private communication with Richard Jakpa, the third accused in the case.

Central to the complaint is an audio recording—already admitted as evidence in court—purportedly capturing an attempt by Mr. Dame to influence Jakpa’s testimony. The audio is backed by WhatsApp messages, which the petitioner claims illustrate a clear pattern of inappropriate contact.

Ofosu-Appiah argues that the conduct breaches several provisions of the Legal Profession (Professional Conduct and Etiquette) Rules, 2020.

These include rules addressing honesty, interference with witnesses, and upholding the integrity of justice. He stresses that such actions, if proven, severely undermine public confidence in Ghana’s legal system.

Calling the matter one of urgent public interest, the petitioner is urging the GLC’s Disciplinary Committee to impose appropriate sanctions—ranging from suspension to the possible striking off of Mr. Dame’s name from the roll of lawyers.

He insists the case must be handled decisively to protect the credibility of Ghana’s legal institutions.
