Pharmaceutical Society demands justice after pharmacist’s murder in Bolgatanga

The Pharmaceutical Society of Ghana (PSGH) has reacted with shock and fury following the cold-blooded murder of Pharmacist Mohammed Zia-ulhak Zibrim, a respected healthcare professional and CEO of Zimax Pharmacy.

Zibrim, who also served as the General Secretary of PSGH’s Upper East Regional Branch, was gunned down outside his home in Bolgatanga on the night of Thursday, June 5, 2025, shortly after returning from work.

In a solemn but forceful statement, PSGH President, Pharm. Dr. Samuel Kow Donkoh, described the killing as a “heinous and barbaric act” that has robbed Ghana’s health sector of one of its brightest and most committed professionals.

“This is not just a loss to his family—it is a deep wound to the entire pharmacy profession and the nation’s healthcare system,” Dr. Donkoh stated.

Zibrim was widely respected for his dedication to service and his unique heritage, being of both Mamprusi and Kusasi descent—a rare symbol of unity in the troubled Bawku enclave.

The PSGH noted with concern that his death may be tied to the region’s prolonged ethnic conflict.

“It is deeply tragic that he has possibly become a victim of the very conflict he stood above—a conflict that should have been resolved long ago,” the statement emphasized.

The PSGH is now calling on the Ghana Police Service and national security agencies to fast-track investigations and ensure the perpetrators face the full force of the law.

They are also urging the government to reinforce protection for healthcare workers, especially community pharmacists who often work into the night.

“The rising threat to pharmacists operating in conflict-prone and high-risk zones cannot be ignored,” the statement read.

“We call on authorities to immediately enhance security measures for our members across the Upper East Region.”

The PSGH also expressed heartfelt condolences to Zibrim’s family—his elderly parents, wife, and four children—pledging full support during this painful period.

“We mourn with you and stand firmly with you. May his legacy inspire peace and professionalism in the face of adversity.”
