Police begin arrest process over Ablekuma North election violence

The Accra Regional Police Command has announced active steps to address violent incidents recorded during the Ablekuma North Parliamentary re-run held on Friday, July 11, 2025.
In a press release dated July 17, the police stated that they are currently reviewing and analyzing multiple video recordings of the events that occurred at various polling stations to identify all those involved.
The command has also begun taking statements from complainants and witnesses to support ongoing investigations.
“The Police have also gathered vital leads and wish to assure the public that arrests will be effected soon,” the statement read.
Meanwhile, victims of the assaults have been provided with Police Medical Report Forms.
In a significant development, a police officer who was captured on video assaulting a journalist during the elections has been interdicted and is now facing criminal charges for assault.
“In line with due process, the Police Officer captured in one of the videos, assaulting a journalist who was interdicted, has been held for criminal charges of assault,” the release confirmed.
The Accra Regional Police Command reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring accountability for all forms of violence, intimidation, or misconduct during elections. It urged the public to support the investigations by reporting any relevant information via the emergency numbers 18555 or 191.
