Police gun down two armed robbers in Atebubu shootout

Two suspected highway robbers have been killed in a shootout with the police during an anti-robbery operation at Atebubu in the Bono East Region, the Ghana Police Service has announced.
According to the police, the encounter occurred on July 30, 2025, when a patrol team came upon an ongoing robbery attack on commuters along the Atebubu highway. The suspects reportedly opened fire upon seeing the officers, prompting the police to return fire.
“Two of the suspects were fatally wounded during the exchange and rushed to the hospital, where they were pronounced dead on arrival,” the statement said.
The remaining gang members managed to escape into nearby bushes, and a manhunt is currently underway to apprehend them.
A search at the scene yielded a short gun loaded with two live cartridges, four spent cartridges, and a machete.
The police assured the public that “intensive efforts are underway” to track down the remaining suspects and maintain safety on the highways.
