Police invite Afenyo-Markin over alleged assault in viral demonstration video

The Ghana Police Service has invited the Minority Leader in Parliament, Hon. Alexander Afenyo-Markin, to assist in investigations following a widely circulated video that allegedly shows him assaulting a police officer during the recent “Save the Judiciary” demonstration in Accra.
In a statement issued by the Service, police officials said multiple video footages from the protest had been reviewed, leading to the decision to request Hon. Afenyo-Markin’s cooperation.
The officer involved, identified as Constable Forson, will also assist in the ongoing investigation.
“Following the review, the Service has written to the Right Honourable Speaker of Parliament requesting the release of Hon. Alexander Afenyo-Markin to assist ongoing investigation into the alleged incident,” the statement noted.
The demonstration, held near the premises of Parliament, saw heavy police presence and brief tensions as protesters—including civil society groups and members of the opposition—called for judicial independence and raised concerns over alleged executive overreach.
While the police have not disclosed full details of the footage, the invitation has stirred public interest, especially as Hon. Afenyo-Markin has strongly denied wrongdoing and promised to clarify what transpired.
The Ghana Police Service emphasized that the investigation aims to establish the facts and maintain accountability on all sides.
