Police on the hunt for gunman after Madina fire shooting

Police are on high alert after a disturbing video showing a man firing a pump-action gun during a fire outbreak at Madina Redco Flats went viral, drawing widespread condemnation and reigniting concerns over law enforcement’s response in crisis situations.

The sporadic shooting unfolded on Sunday, August 3, during a major fire at Ritz Junction. Over 50 makeshift wooden and metal structures were destroyed in the blaze, displacing scores of residents.

Amid the confusion, the man — identified only as “Area” — was seen in the video shooting the firearm indiscriminately.

He initially fired from a distance and later advanced toward a panicked crowd, reportedly trying to target onlookers. Bystanders could be seen ducking and running for cover as shots rang out, even as police and fire officers were at the scene.

The footage has intensified public anger, with many questioning why the police failed to act swiftly to restrain or apprehend the suspect during the incident.

The Madina Police say a manhunt has been launched to locate and arrest the gunman.

Meanwhile, the Municipal Chief Executive for La Nkwantanang-Madina, Ibrahim Faila Fuseini, has alleged that the fire was no accident. He believes it is part of a calculated attempt by a private individual to forcibly take over state-acquired land.

“This is the third time in three months that this area has gone up in flames,” he told Citi News. “All indications suggest that this is a deliberate act by one person.”

The Ghana National Fire Service, which responded promptly, managed to bring the fire under control within 20 minutes despite challenges posed by heavy smoke and falling power lines.
