Political parties to stage nationwide protest against suspension of Chief Justice

A coalition of political parties in Ghana has announced plans for a nationwide demonstration on Monday, May 5, 2025, in protest against what they describe as the unlawful suspension of the Chief Justice and politically motivated dismissals of key public officers.

In a joint statement issued after an emergency meeting held on Thursday, April 24, 2025, the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Liberal Party of Ghana (LPG), National Democratic Party (NDP), People’s National Party (PNP), Ghana Union Movement (GUM), and other affiliated parties vowed to “defend the Constitution and protect judicial independence.”

Describing the suspension as a direct assault on Ghana’s democracy, the coalition accused the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) of orchestrating a long-standing campaign of judicial intimidation.

The parties drew parallels to what they called a “failed plot” in 2010 to remove former Chief Justice Georgina Theodora Wood, suggesting that similar tactics were being repeated.

“This is not a political matter—it is a matter of principle and national interest,” the statement said. “We cannot sit idly by while the foundation of our republic is being eroded.”

The coalition called on civil society organizations, religious groups including the Christian Council and Ghana Pentecostal Council, and all patriotic citizens to join the protest.

The statement also alleged a broader agenda by the NDC to gain control over key constitutional institutions, including plans to challenge Article 66(2) of the Constitution in the Supreme Court, potentially to legitimize a third presidential term bid by former President John Mahama.

The political parties urged all Ghanaians who value the rule of law, justice, and the sanctity of democratic institutions to rise in defense of the Constitution.

“This is a fight for Ghana, a fight for justice, and a fight for our future,” the statement concluded.
