Poverty grab me – Broda Shaggi reveals why skitmaking became his breakthrough path

Broda Shaggi has revealed that financial hardship and repeated industry rejection pushed him into creating skits as a survival strategy.

Reflecting on his early post-school struggles, he admitted, “Poverty grab you. You go find your calling.”

After graduation, Shaggi aggressively pursued acting auditions but rarely succeeded. “Every day I go for auditions. Most times they won’t pick. They’d just tell us to drop passport, drop picture,” he said.

He recalled a defining moment during The Wedding Party audition. “I came late from Makoko, and the person said there’s nothing she can do. I begged her.

“She said if I do it she won’t pay me. I said no problem. I just wanted to be in the scene,” Shaggi recounted.

Despite small breakthroughs, he soon realized his visibility in movies was not enough.
“Nobody really dey see me. I wanted to be out there so bad,” he explained.

This frustration birthed the Broda Shaggi character. “I said, okay, I have to start something on my own. Push myself by myself,” he said.

He and actress Sophia (Aunty Shaggi) began filming interview-style skits on his phone. One unexpected repost changed everything.

“My friend called me, ‘Sam, come post your video.’ I saw the video online. I nearly cry. I knew this was the point,” he revealed.

Since then, daily writing and relentless output have fueled the brand. “People said I would ‘she’ if I post too much, but I don’t get tired. This is my job 24/7,” he said.
