President Mahama directs GH¢1 billion Bawku rehabilitation fund following Otumfuo mediation

President John Dramani Mahama has directed the Minister of Finance, Hon. Cassiel Ato Baah Forson, to establish a GH¢1 billion Bawku Rehabilitation Fund aimed at revitalizing the area after the protracted conflict between the Mamprusi and Kusasi communities.

The fund will be implemented over a three-year period from 2026 to 2028 and will support reconstruction and development of roads, healthcare, education, dams, irrigation facilities, security installations, and economic infrastructure.

The directive follows the submission of the Bawku Conflict Mediation Report, presented on December 16, 2025, by His Majesty Otumfuo Osei Tutu II.

The President endorsed the report’s recommendations, including the recall of Alhaji Seidu Abagre, previously a rival claimant, to assume an alternative traditional role with state facilitation.

The Government emphasized that the Supreme Court of Ghana upholds Naba Asigri Abugrago Azoka II as the lawful Bawku Naba and affirmed that no individual or group may contest his authority.

President Mahama called on all stakeholders to support the reconciliation process and underscored that the initiative aims to foster lasting peace, stability, and socio-economic recovery in Bawku and its environs.

The administration highlighted that the conflict has significantly undermined livelihoods, social cohesion, and development prospects, necessitating urgent intervention.

The Government also expressed gratitude to His Majesty Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, the Naba Asigri Abugrago Azoka II, and all parties involved for their contributions to the historic mediation and reconciliation efforts.
