President John Dramani Mahama has terminated the controversial 19-year sanitation contract between the Youth Employment Agency and Zoomlion Ghana Limited.
The decision comes after investigative journalist Manasseh Azure Awuni petitioned the presidency with evidence of mismanagement.
In an official response, the President confirmed the expired contract won’t be renewed and ordered an audit of all post-expiry payments to Zoomlion.
Future sanitation contracts will now go through competitive regional bidding to cut costs and improve services.
The move will free up funds to increase wages for street sweepers to “a more liveable income.” Poorly performing fumigation contracts will also be reviewed and potentially canceled.
