President Mahama forgives Sammy Gyamfi over dollar gift controversy

President John Dramani Mahama has drawn a line under the controversy surrounding the acting CEO of the Ghana Gold Board, Sammy Gyamfi, following the circulation of a viral video that captured him handing over an undisclosed amount of U.S. dollars to evangelist Patricia Asiedua Asiamah, widely known as Nana Agradaa.

The footage sparked intense backlash across social and political circles, with civil society groups and opposition figures demanding Gyamfi’s dismissal.

Many argued that the gesture raised red flags about possible breaches of Ghana’s Foreign Exchange Act and the ethical standards expected of public officials.

Despite the public outrage, President Mahama has opted not to pursue disciplinary measures. His decision, according to Minister for Government Communications Felix Kwakye Ofosu, follows Gyamfi’s public apology for the incident, which the President has accepted.

Speaking at a press briefing, Mr. Kwakye Ofosu said that while the President considers the incident unfortunate, he believes the apology suffices and sees no need for further sanctions at this time.

Nonetheless, he emphasized that a firm warning has been issued to Mr. Gyamfi and all public servants to adhere strictly to the Code of Conduct for appointees.

“The President expects every official to act in ways that inspire confidence and reflect the integrity of public office,” Mr. Kwakye Ofosu said, reiterating Mahama’s stance on ethical leadership and accountability.
