President Mahama meets USAFRICOM Commander on regional security

President John Dramani Mahama engaged in high-level bilateral meetings on Thursday, February 13, at the Munich Security Conference, focusing on security cooperation and investment opportunities for Ghana.

A key highlight of the day was his strategic dialogue with General Michael E. Langley, Commander of the United States African Command (USAFRICOM). Their discussions centered on strengthening regional security, countering subregional threats, and increasing U.S. defense collaboration with Ghana.

In the wake of evolving security challenges in West Africa, President Mahama emphasized the importance of closer ties with the United States.

Today’s meeting with General Langley highlights Ghana’s commitment to enhancing our security posture in response to evolving threats across the region,” said President Mahama. “We appreciate the support of the United States and are keen to expand our collaborative efforts.

The leaders explored the possibility of a bilateral agreement for joint maritime patrols to protect Ghana’s coastal waters from illegal fishing, piracy, and trafficking. These patrols would bolster Ghana’s maritime security infrastructure and safeguard its vital economic zones.

Additionally, increased coordination between USAFRICOM and the Ghana Armed Forces was discussed, particularly in the areas of logistics, intelligence sharing, and defense strategy alignment. This would enhance Ghana’s operational readiness in addressing security threats.

With West Africa facing growing threats from terrorism, piracy, and transnational crime, President Mahama’s meeting with General Langley underscores Ghana’s proactive approach to strengthening regional stability. By reinforcing security partnerships, Ghana aims to play a pivotal role in promoting peace and security across the subregion.

The Munich Security Conference serves as a global platform for critical security discussions, bringing together leaders from across the world.

President Mahama’s engagement with USAFRICOM demonstrates Ghana’s commitment to international security cooperation and its strategic partnership with the United States.
