Speaker Bagbin unveils plans to implement 24-hour economy within parliamentary service

Speaker of Parliament, Rt. Hon. Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, has announced a bold move to implement the much-discussed 24-hour economy policy within Ghana’s Parliamentary Service, as part of a larger national push to increase productivity and reduce unemployment.

Speaking during the official presentation of the final 24-hour economy policy document on Thursday, June 26, by representatives from the Office of the President, the Speaker emphasized the significance of the initiative in creating more job opportunities and optimizing workflow within the legislature.

“This means they are going to work more hours; they will be reporting at 8:00 a.m. and may be going home at 10:00 p.m. or sometimes 11:00 p.m.—particularly those in the official division of the House,” Bagbin said.

According to the Speaker, the extended hours would not only allow the legislature to operate more efficiently but would also open the door for more employment within the service.

“This will allow more people to work here and will help reduce unemployment. I can assure you that the load of work here is unimaginable,” he added.

The 24-hour economy policy, which has been a topical issue in Ghana’s political and economic discourse, is intended to create a framework where various sectors of the economy can operate in three shifts around the clock, thereby enhancing job creation, increasing service delivery, and improving national development outcomes.

More details on how the shift system will be rolled out across departments of the Parliamentary Service are expected in the coming weeks.
