Pressure mounts on NDC to withdraw from Akwatia by-election

President of policy think tank Imani Africa, Franklin Cudjoe, has urged the National Democratic Congress (NDC) to withdraw from the Akwatia by-election.
His call came on the back of the decision of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to stay away from contesting for the Tamale Central seat after their Member of Parliament died in the helicopter crash on August 6.
To him, if the NPP has been nationalistic and has decided not to contest because the Member of Parliament lost his life, the NDC must reciprocate the gesture.
In a Facebook post expressing his position on the matter, he said, “The NPP has decided not to contest the late Hon. Murtala’s seat. Good call. The NDC should do the same. They should not contest Akwatia.”
His position has been backed by many who believe that the by-elections will just add to the rising tensions in the country.
They have argued that it will be better for the National Democratic Congress to follow the footsteps of the opposition to calm nerves and also prove that their call for unity after losing two cabinet ministers is from the right place.
Meanwhile, Rashid Tanko, who is the party’s Deputy Elections and IT officer, has indicated that they are mourning and therefore have put to rest issues bothering the Akwatia by-election.
