Previous appointees under investigation will be arrested if they come to Akwatia—Mustapha Gbande

Deputy General Secretary and Deputy Director of Operations of the Presidency, Mustapha Gbande, has cautioned previous appointees who were engaged in any form of crime against going to Akwatia.

According to him, such individuals will be arrested during the Akwatia by-elections.

“We will go to Akwatia; however, all previous appointees who were involved in any crime will be reported to the police and will be arrested if they enter Akwatia. They are on record to have been involved in money laundering, visa racketeering, among others, and they will be arrested in Akwatia. Every Member of Parliament who is wanted for any crime will be arrested in Akwatia because they will not be going to Parliament,” he said.

He indicated that the National Democratic Congress (NDC) is going to Akwatia peacefully and will not foment any trouble; however, they will ensure that former appointees who are involved in any form of investigations are locked up by the police if they show up for the by-election.

“We will do everything to prevent violence from occurring and preserve the image of the government and our party. We will not set the same record NPP has set for itself. But if you’re wanted by the state, we will encourage the police to lock you up in Akwatia. Let the NPP know that this afternoon. Anyone involved in a crime will be arrested,” he stated.

He continued, “Afenyo Markin who slapped a police officer, will be arrested in Akwatia if he comes there. We don’t support violence and will ensure that people who have committed a crime in the NPP and have not yet been arrested will be arrested in Akwatia.”

The Akwatia by-election has become necessary after Member of Parliament Ernest Kumi died six months after winning the seat.

The New Patriotic Party has endorsed Solomon Kwame Asumadu as their Parliamentary candidate, while the National Democratic Congress (NDC) will go to primaries on August 4, 2025, to elect a candidate.
