Proprietor arrested for confining BECE candidates over unpaid fees

The proprietor of The Big Six Educational Complex at Meduma in the Ashanti Region has been arrested for allegedly preventing two Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) candidates from writing their Mathematics paper over unpaid registration fees.

Mr. Afoakwa Sarpong was arrested on Monday, June 17, 2025, around 2:00 p.m. by the Kwabre East Municipal Education Director, Nana Adu Mensah Asare, and the Public Relations Officer of the Directorate, Ms. Mavis Okyere Anane.

He was subsequently handed over to the Mamponteng District Police Command.

The arrest follows a troubling incident that occurred on Sunday, June 16, 2025, during the ongoing BECE.

According to preliminary reports, Mr. Sarpong allegedly confined two students in a separate room at the examination centre, barring them from taking the Mathematics paper due to non-payment of registration fees.

The candidates were reportedly released only after the exam had ended.

The Police are investigating the matter as a case of assault by imprisonment. The Mamponteng District Police Command has initiated a formal investigation, and all legal procedures will be followed accordingly.

In a statement signed by Deputy Superintendent of Police Godwin Ahianyo, Head of the Public Affairs Unit for the Ashanti Region, the Police assured the public of due process and promised to provide further updates as investigations continue.
