Protest looms as gov’t fails to tackle galamsey – Barker-Vormawor hints

Private legal practitioner and social activist Oliver Barker-Vormawor has announced that the #FixTheCountry movement is set to return to the streets in protest over what it describes as the government’s continued inaction on illegal mining, widely referred to as galamsey.

“It’s been four months. The level of seriousness the government has shown in other areas makes us believe that a clear strategy to tackle galamsey should have already been unveiled,” Barker-Vormawor said, expressing the group’s frustration at the lack of a decisive plan to address the growing environmental crisis.

The activist explained that the decision to mobilise once again stems from the urgency of the issue and the government’s failure to treat it with the seriousness it demands. “For us, the reason we’re mobilising back to the streets is to remind the government that this is a serious and urgent issue,” he stated.

Barker-Vormawor also made it clear that this is not a protest for optics or to gain favour with political elites. “This goes beyond our daily bread or the comfort of fraternising with ministers we admire. Let’s show up and hold the government accountable for addressing the problems we face,” he added.

The upcoming demonstration is expected to reignite public discourse on the government’s commitment to fighting illegal mining, which has caused significant environmental degradation, polluted water bodies, and displaced communities across parts of the country.
