Pure showmanship took over the tour – Akomea on NPP’s internal rivalries

Former National Communications Director of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Nana Akomea, has opened up about internal tensions that marred the party’s recent ‘Thank You’ tour, describing it as a misguided show of loyalty rather than a moment of unity.

Speaking in an interview on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen show, Akomea revealed that the tour, which was meant to express gratitude to party supporters, quickly spiraled into a contest of allegiance in the wake of the flagbearer race.

“Our Thank You tour started becoming a popularity contest. People felt they needed to show they supported one person more than the other, and that created tension,” he explained.

He further disclosed that nearly every region they visited was marked by conflict. “In all the regions we visited, there were misunderstandings. At Berekum and Bantama, there was chaos – and this was supposed to be a Thank You tour,” he said.

Akomea also cited an incident involving Ashanti Regional Chairman Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, who was recently arrested by the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO). According to him, even that episode became a stage for political grandstanding.

“Even when Chairman Wontumi was arrested at EOCO, people were fighting over who would pay his bail – just to show who supports who in the flagbearer race. That was pure showmanship,” he added.
