Railway workers set for strike, cite 12 months of salary arrears

The Railway Workers Union of Ghana (RWU) has announced a nationwide strike and picketing on September 30, 2025, over 12 months of unpaid salaries.

In a letter to the Ghana Police Service, the Union said arrears dating back to October 2024 have plunged workers into financial crisis, leading to broken homes, health problems, and children being forced out of school.

Despite repeated appeals, the Ministry of Transport has not initiated any negotiations. “By Monday, 22nd September 2025, if no concrete measures are taken, we shall proceed to act under Sections 160 and 171 of the Labour Act,” warned General Secretary Benjamin Essuman.

Railway workers from Tema, Accra, Kumasi, Takoradi, and Tarkwa are expected to march through key state institutions in Accra, including the Ministry of Transport, Parliament, and the Railway Development Authority, before ending at TUC headquarters.

The Union assured police of a peaceful exercise and requested security support.
