Ras Mubarak praises Eswatini as Africa’s Mecca of culture and tradition

Former Member of Parliament Ras Mubarak has praised Eswatini for its embrace of African heritage, pointing to the kingdom as a “mecca of culture and tradition” on the continent.

In a recent social media post, Mubarak shared insights about cultural practices in Eswatini, highlighting marriage traditions and dress codes as examples of deep-rooted heritage.

“Did you know that to marry a Swazi woman who’s not from a royal family you need to pay a dowry of at least 17 cows?” he wrote, underlining the significance of traditional marital customs in the country.

Mubarak also lauded Eswatini’s approach to attire, noting the seamless integration of African dress in professional and social settings. “In Eswatini you can dress like this to work — office or boardroom — from Monday to Friday, and on weekends to social and traditional events,” he said.

He urged Africans to embrace their own traditions, calling for a shift away from European fashion norms. “The Africa we want requires that we uphold the best of our traditions and culture. As Africans we need to dress less like Europeans and more like Africans,” Mubarak emphasized.

Concluding his reflections, the former lawmaker described Eswatini as a shining example for other African nations. “Eswatini is certainly the mecca of culture and tradition in Africa,” he wrote, highlighting the country’s commitment to preserving and celebrating its cultural identity.
