Rawlings made me want to be a soldier

Mr. Tanko Rashid, widely known as “Computer,” has shared a personal and unexpected chapter of his early life, one deeply influenced by his admiration for former President Jerry John Rawlings.

The Deputy National Elections Director of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) revealed that his first ambition as a young man was to serve in the military, inspired by Rawlings’ leadership and revolutionary zeal.

“Actually, initially I wanted to join the military because of Rawlings,” he confessed in an interview on JoyNews’ Personality Profile.

“We used to call it the Democratic Youth League of Ghana; it was one of the offshoots of the PNDC.

“So I was so passionate about Rawlings-ism and then his move. I was too smallish at that time, so it’s like I wasn’t qualified.”

According to him, his youthful enthusiasm for Rawlings and the Provisional National Defence Council (PNDC) era shaped his early outlook on leadership and service. However, physical limitations stood in the way of his military aspirations.

Beyond that disappointment, Mr Tanko said his life took a different turn following the loss of his parents at a tender age.

“I lost my parents at a very early age. So I decided that the only way I could survive the trend of life was to make sure that I go through education,” he shared.
