To settle the rancour and hold the gov’t accountable— Justin Kodua on why NPP is electing a flagbearer in Jan. 2026

The General Secretary for the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), Justin Kodua, has defended the decision to elect their flagbearer early ahead of the 2028 elections.

According to him, the party has decided to elect their leader early to esnure that the rancour within the party is settled.

He argues that if that is settled, the political party will have a leader to hold the government accountable to the people of Ghana.

“We can acknowledge that currently, the rancour in the political party is about who becomes the flagbearer of the party. You can see from the comments on social media. So the party has decided to elect their flagbearer to bring to rest the rancour and ensure there is unity,” he told OB on Asempa FM.

He argued further that “we have also noted that there is a need for the party to have a leader who will keep the government in check. We need a leader who will respond to and keep the government in check; hence the decision to elect their flagbearer early”.

Justin Kodua debunked claims that he decided that the party would go to the polls early to elect a flagbearer, indicating that the National Council decided and approved the date.

The New Patriotic Party will be electing their flagbearer for the 2028 elections on January 31, 2026.

The decision was announced after a NEC meeting on June 17, 2025 at the Alisa Hotel in Accra.

The meeting, which was chaired by Chairman Butey, agreed to a number of resolutions, including the party’s National Delegates Conference, which is scheduled for July 19, 2025, at the University of Ghana Sports Stadium.

Meanwhile, some section of the political party have kicked against the decision taken by the party’s National Council.

They believe that the top-to-bottom approach by the political party will destroy the NPP, as the party is known to always stick with the bottom-up approach in their internal elections.
