Rektron to acquire majority stake in AT Ghana, eyes telecom expansion

Canadian conglomerate Rektron Group has revealed plans to acquire a 60% stake in AT Ghana Limited, marking a major step into Ghana’s telecom sector in partnership with local firm Afritel Ghana Limited.
The deal, which remains subject to regulatory approvals and due diligence, was announced on June 4 through a statement issued from Vancouver. Rektron emphasized that the move aligns with its global strategy to deepen investments in emerging markets and strengthen digital infrastructure across Africa.
AT Ghana, formerly AirtelTigo, is currently fully owned by the Ghanaian government after it was nationalized in 2021.
It serves over 2.3 million users with voice, data, and mobile financial services. The government has endorsed the proposed acquisition and signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Rektron and Afritel on May 21 to initiate the process.
“This aligns with our global vision to advance major infrastructure initiatives, foster innovation, and deliver value to consumers throughout the region,” said Rektron CEO Atanas Kolarov.
Rektron, which is listed on the Canadian and Frankfurt stock exchanges, believes the acquisition will offer long-term returns and help scale up Ghana’s telecom infrastructure.
The partnership with Afritel, founded by telecom pioneer Nana Richmond Aggrey, is expected to blend global capital with local expertise.
“This partnership marks a major milestone in our mission to advance telecommunication services in Ghana,” said Aggrey, promising improved coverage, speed, and affordability for consumers across the country, especially in underserved regions.
