Restore justice now; protesters rally against CJ’s suspension

A group of young Ghanaians gathered near Independence Square on Thursday, May 22, 2025, to protest the suspension of Chief Justice Gertrude Araba Esaaba Sackey Torkornoo.

Their call was simple: justice, transparency, and a swift reversal of what they believe is a politically driven move against Ghana’s judiciary.

Holding placards with messages such as “Restore the Chief Justice Now” and “Don’t Erode Public Trust,” the group voiced frustration with the process leading to her suspension.

They argued that proceedings surrounding the Chief Justice’s case have lacked openness and are damaging confidence in the legal system.

“This is bigger than one individual. It’s about the independence of our judiciary,” said one of the protest leaders. “If there are allegations, let them be addressed publicly and fairly. Not behind closed doors.”

The protest, though peaceful, sent a strong message. The demonstrators suggested that the Chief Justice is being targeted for defending the judiciary’s autonomy and described the suspension as part of a broader agenda to weaken key institutions.
