Rotational nurses, midwives to begin nationwide strike on June 2 over unpaid allowances

The Rotational Nurses and Midwives Association of Ghana has declared a nationwide strike effective June 2, 2025, citing the government’s persistent failure to pay 12 months of outstanding allowances.
The group says it was compelled to take this action after a 14-working-day ultimatum issued to the government failed to yield any response. The association describes the continued silence from the Ministry of Health as unacceptable and a sign of disregard for their essential role in the healthcare system.
Speaking to Citi News, the Association’s President, Ebenezer Boateng, voiced the growing frustration among members.
“The minister has not communicated officially to us, which is very sad. This is because they see us now as insignificant in the health sector, in the ministry, as well as to the public,” he said.
Boateng emphasized that the strike will go ahead as planned unless the government takes concrete action to address their demands.
“On June 2, we are going on a nationwide strike. We do not want to hear any story from them. This has been a consistent problem for about 5 years now. All they give is an assurance—we don’t need that now,” he added.
The Association insists the strike is a last resort, taken after exhausting all available avenues for dialogue. They are calling on the government to honor its obligations and prevent further disruption to essential health services.
