Bawumia’s betting tax promise under scrutiny as Sammy Gyamfi calls out NPP’s inconsistencies

The debate over Ghana’s controversial betting tax has taken center stage once again, with NDC’s Sammy Gyamfi challenging former Finance Minister Amin Adam’s claim that the previous NPP government never implemented the tax.
At the heart of this argument is Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s campaign promise to scrap the 10% betting tax—a pledge that Gyamfi says exposes contradictions within the opposition party.
Gyamfi argues that if the tax was never collected, as Amin Adam insists, then there would have been no need for Bawumia to promise its removal.
“If you did not collect the tax, why was Bawumia promising to scrap it?” Gyamfi questioned in an exclusive interview with TV3. He further accused the former Finance Minister of either being dishonest or failing to properly execute his duties.
His comment comes after Dr Amin Adam said it was deceptive for the NDC government to claim to abolish a tax that was never collected although the law was passed in 2023.
“Betting tax that they said they have abolished, we never collected Betting Tax. So to come and tell Ghanaians that you have abolished something that you have not implemented is to deceive the people of Ghana,” he said in a televised press conference.
