Sam George gives DSTV August 7 deadline to cut prices or risk suspension

Minister for Communication, Digital Technology and Innovation, Hon. Sam Nartey George, has issued a firm ultimatum to Multichoice Ghana, operators of DSTV, to slash subscription prices or risk losing their broadcasting license in Ghana.

According to the Minister, if the company fails to comply by Wednesday, 7th August 2025, their broadcasting license will be suspended.

He made this announcement during a live broadcast of the Government Accountability Series, where he emphasized the government’s duty to protect consumer interest amid public outcry over DSTV’s current pricing and content.

“Despite a 30% appreciation of the cedi over the past five months, DSTV subscription fees have not been reduced accordingly,” Sam George stated. “Ghanaians deserve better—this is not about politics, it’s about fairness.”

Last month, the Minister publicly called on Multichoice to implement a 30% reduction in DSTV rates, urging them to align with the strengthened Ghanaian currency.

He said the government had received mounting complaints from citizens who felt they were being unfairly charged despite an improved economic environment.

During a meeting with a delegation from DSTV led by Dr. Keabetswe Modimoeng, Group Executive for Regulatory and Corporate Affairs, Hon. Sam George reiterated government’s position. He pointed out that Ghanaians are increasingly frustrated with high prices and limited, outdated content—noting that beyond Premier League football, many subscribers found little value in the current DSTV packages.

While Multichoice has introduced promotional offers in response to the criticism, the Minister made it clear that consumers prefer a permanent price reduction, not temporary marketing gimmicks.

“Government’s mandate is to listen and act. Ghanaians are calling for real price adjustments, not promos. We expect Multichoice to act—or face regulatory action,” the Minister cautioned.
