Sammy Gyamfi applauds Mahama’s suspension of Chief Justice as ‘courageous and lawful’

National Communications Officer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Sammy Gyamfi, has praised President John Dramani Mahama for what he describes as a bold and constitutional decision to suspend Chief Justice Gertrude Araba Esaaba Sackey Torkornoo.
Reacting to the announcement via a social media post on Tuesday, April 22, 2025, Mr. Gyamfi wrote, “Thank you Mr. President @JDMahama for your courage. Your suspension of the Chief Justice in accordance with the advice of the Council of State is a testament of your fidelity to the Constitution and the rule of law.”
President Mahama’s decision follows the establishment of a prima facie case against the Chief Justice based on three separate petitions. In line with Article 146(6) of the 1992 Constitution, a five-member committee, chaired by Supreme Court Justice Gabriel Scott Pwamang, has been set up to investigate the allegations.
The suspension, effective immediately, has sparked widespread political reaction, with critics and supporters weighing in on the constitutional and political implications of the move.
Mr. Gyamfi’s remarks stand in contrast to other voices, including political opponents like Akosua Manu, who have questioned the motives behind the suspension.
