Sammy Gyamfi must be suspended for breaching forex laws – Minority

The Minority in Parliament is calling for the immediate suspension of the Acting Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Gold Board (GOLDBOD), Sammy Gyamfi, following a viral video that shows him handing over an undisclosed amount of US dollars to evangelist Patricia Oduro Koranteng, popularly known as Nana Agradaa.

The footage, which has sparked widespread criticism, shows the prominent lawyer and government appointee giving out foreign currency to the controversial former fetish priestess turned evangelist.

Although Gyamfi has since issued an apology, the matter has attracted the attention of the Chief of Staff, Julius Debrah, who has reportedly summoned him for questioning.

At a press conference on Monday, May 12, 2025, Member of Parliament for Walewale and a member of the Finance Committee, Dr. Kabiru Tia Mahama, emphasized that the Minority is demanding swift action from the Presidency.

“We are calling for the immediate suspension of Sammy Gyamfi as acting CEO of the Ghana Gold Board. His actions are in direct violation of the Code of Conduct, the Foreign Exchange Act, and the Currency Act,” Dr. Mahama said.

He further stressed that Gyamfi, a seasoned lawyer, cannot claim ignorance of the laws governing foreign currency transactions in Ghana.

“Even the Chief Justice has noted that ignorance of the law is no excuse. Sammy Gyamfi is fully aware of the legal implications of his actions and must be held accountable,” he added.

The Minority is also calling for a full-scale investigation into the origin of the dollar notes shown in the viral video.

“We demand a thorough investigation into the source of the foreign currency displayed,” Dr. Mahama stated.

The controversy comes at a time when the government is striving to stabilize the Ghanaian cedi and curb the use of foreign currency in local transactions. The Minority insists that actions such as these not only contravene the law but also undermine public trust in government officials and institutions.
