Sammy Gyamfi’s act contradicts government policy on cedi – Ras Mubarak
Ras Mubarak, a former Member of Parliament for Kumbungu, has voiced concerns over the recent video involving Sammy Gyamfi and self-styled evangelist Nana Agradaa.
Mubarak emphasized that public office holders must prioritize national interests, particularly by demonstrating confidence in the country’s economy and currency.
Speaking out on the issue, Mubarak highlighted that it is unacceptable for someone in a government position to be seen giving away foreign currency—especially at a time when the Ghanaian cedi has shown signs of improvement.
He pointed out that while the gift may have been well-intentioned, it undermines the local currency, which is already facing challenges due to various sectors of the economy (including schools and property owners) increasingly charging in US dollars.
“Sammy Gyamfi’s actions could be perceived as a lack of confidence in the cedi. It contradicts government regulations that encourage the use of local currency, and such actions could have a negative impact on the cedi’s value and stability,” he stated.
Mubarak also called out Agradaa, saying that she must be held accountable for any taxes due on the foreign currency she received.
“Mama Pat Agradaa should pay the gift tax. The Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) must pursue the tax component on the gift,” he said, underlining the importance of adhering to the country’s tax laws.
